Paleo is a term that is being thrown around pretty loosely these days---everyone and their uncle is doing some type of "Paleo" eating. Is it the next fad or is there really something to this Paleo/Primal type of eating? Or, in some cases, it's a way of life. And just talk to a few "Paleo" people on social media and you'll see a variety of beliefs, philosophies, etc. from legumes allowed, dairy/no dairy, etc.
So without going into too much detail, what can you do TODAY, right now, to start incorporating Paleo Principles into your life? (And believe me, if you want all the research there are plenty of places to start researching all of this stuff and I have 2 key resources that I recommend you check out at the bottom of this post. However, I'm not enough of a paleo expert (or a doctor) to dive that much into some of the complicated issues and questions! lol
3 Ways to Start Living More Primal Today!
1. Follow the food pyramid on the left! Simply cut out most grains, legumes, and dairy and see how you feel. No, it's not a "low-carb" diet--it's a no grain diet. You still get plenty of carbs from fruits and veggies so it works for athletes too who "need" the carbs for fuel.
2. Start incorporating more play each day and easing up on the workouts. Yes, I said easing up on the workouts! According to Mark Sisson, there are only a few things you need in your workout regiment to really see results: 1. Lift heavy things once or twice per week, 2. Slow movement 4-5 times per week (walking, biking, elliptical even---a great way to get some work done and still keep moving), and sprints 1-2 times per week. He believes in resting often, so if you're tired take a day off. It's definitely less regimented than your typically fitness program (and may be a relief to some of you who are burned out from your typical day-to-day fitness program).
And 3. Sleep! Yes, recovery is one of your best tools! Shoot for 7-9 hours of sleep per night and try to keep your room BLACK (yes, shoot for a black room! For more info, check out The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf). So get invest in some black out curtains or a dark sleeping mask (you'll look like Zorro... except with the sword... or the, uh, vision...
So take these 3 tips and start incorporating a little primal into your everyday life. Heck, you can even start carrying around a caveman club if you want (a club always makes it for more fun... especially if you are, ya know, golfing... lol)
