We all go through it and sometimes it's rough. I even kind of went through one just a few weeks ago as I mentioned in my Monday Reboot post. But it doesn't mean you have to stay there or just "suffer" through it.
One of things I like to do is keep myself motivated with new information and new ideas is listening to Podcasts, and one of my favorites is Chalene Johnson's (she's the trainer in PiYo and in TurboFire) podcast titled "How to Dump the Fitness Slump".
In this podcast her friend Keith Harris had just been getting "busy" with life and couldn't find the energy or the motivation to keep pushing through his workouts, even after having some really significant success and weight loss. Here are some of the tips she shared, with some of my own insights offered on what's also worked well for me in the past as well.
Tip #1 Redefine your why
We hear this all the time, but if your "Why" is strong enough, the "How" will appear. But in all seriousness, this is a big step that people become "immune" to hearing. Don't do that... Get out your pen and paper right now and write down (don't type it) why you want to get hit your fitness goals.
Some things to write down:
How will your life change when you hit your goals?
What will you be able to do and feel when you hit your goals?
Write these down in the form of positive affirmations that go something like this:
1. When I (lose, hit my goal, etc...) I can't wait to.......................
2. I feel ____________ as I am now _____________________________.
3. I can't wait to be _______________________ in my new body.
Tip #2 Write down the feelings you have after an awesome workout
One of the things Chalene's friend loved about doing his workouts were that during and after his workouts he felt amazing---he had no stress and he wasn't thinking about anything else. How many other times during the day does that happen? Not very often... There are always things going through our heads at any given moment, whether we're at work thinking about being at home or even worse, being home and thinking about work!
So for him, it was this reward and gratification of acheivement and focus. So after your best workout, what do you feel or get out of it? Write those down and read them each morning.
After my workouts I feel:
Amazing, focused, like I can accomplish anything, strong, powerful, on a "high", confident...
The next step...
The next step is to go and listen to Chalene's Podcast right now, go through these two tips and actually do your homework, and get to work!
